Elementary General Music
Pre-Kindergarten thru Grade 6

All students in the Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School have 40 minutes of music class per week. Also, students have an additional music class on Friday for one nine weeks.

Music classes consist of singing songs, moving to music, learning to play instruments, reading/writing/ listening to music, learning music in relation to history and culture.

All students in First Grade through Sixth Grade begin the school year playing the Orff Instruments. Students learn the proper technique to play accompaniment patterns on the Orff instruments while singing familiar songs. The Orff instruments are xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and other percussion instruments that music educator, Carl Orff, used to instruct children for learning music in Germany in the 1930’s. The Fifth/Sixth Grade students present an Orff Concert in the fall. Since movement is an integral part of the Orff process, the Fifth/Sixth Grade Chorus is featured with singing and providing movement/choreography while each fifth/sixth grade class performs.

The All School Jefferson-Morgan Elementary Christmas Program will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 9:15am and 1:00pm at the J-M High School Auditorium. All students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6 will be featured.

The J-M Elementary Spring Concert will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 7:00pm and will feature the Fifth/Sixth Grade Elementary Band, the Fourth Grade Recorder Students, and the Fifth/Sixth Grade Elementary Chorus.

Our Third Grade students received a grant to work with Attack Theatre from Pittsburgh for three days in October 2010. The grant, entitled “Enhancing Student Achievement Through Movement,” will give all third graders an opportunity to accomplish a reading concept that is tested on the PSSA by incorporating movement in the learning process. Studies show that using creative movement helps students to retain things they have learned. We look forward to welcoming Attack Theatre to our school!
